APRN: Pediatric Heart Murmurs

Overview:
The ability of APRN to discern pediatric heart murmurs is critical for accurate assessment of etiology, appropriate diagnostic testing, and prudent referral when indicated. This review includes an overview of cardiac assessment, distinguishing features of innocent and pathologic murmurs, differential diagnosis of murmurs, and current referral recommendations.
Knowledge regarding clinical presentation of common pediatric heart murmurs, the impact of these murmurs on the health of the child, and the recommendations for diagnostic testing and referral are critical for evaluation and management in primary care.
Purpose/Goal: To provide APRN with an overview of the evaluation and management of pediatric heart murmurs in primary care.
Objectives:
1. Describe the types of pediatric innocent and pathologic heart murmurs.
2. Demonstrate how to assess and manage pediatric heart murmurs.
