Fluids and Electrolytes
An understanding of fluid and electrolyte balance is important in order to safely initiate, provide, and monitor intravenous (IV) infusions. Infusion therapy is often used to supplement or replace lost body fluids or electrolytes. It may be used to help the body maintain homeostasis through the addition of specific fluids, concentrations, or types of fluid. In this course, you will learn about the fluid compartments within the body, fluid gain and loss, and solutes in body fluids. You will also learn about electrolytes, passive and active transport, and the process of osmosis.
• Identify the fluid compartments within the body, fluid gain and loss, and solutes in body fluids
• Distinguish the characteristics of electrolytes
• Differentiate passive and active transport and the process of osmosis.
