APRN: Understanding Viral Hepatitis: A Guide for Primary Care
This activity is co-provided by American Nurses Association (provider) and Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (co-provider).
Overview:
Viral hepatitis is a common cause of acute and chronic liver disease. Recent advancements in the field of genomics and proteomics technology have given researchers and clinicians more insight on disease pathogenesis and helped create more tailored approaches to the treatment of these conditions. Signs and symptoms of the various forms of viral hepatitis -- identified as A, B, C, D, and E variants -- may be similar and thus, serological testing may be the only method to make the diagnosis. Understanding the differences among the types of viral hepatitis is of utmost importance to allow APRN to diagnose, manage, and help prevent these infections. APRN play an important role in the diagnosis and management of viral hepatitis. They should be equipped with the knowledge to identify the appropriate diagnostic tests in a timely manner and make necessary referrals to specialists, while still managing overall care of the patient. Continuum of care for these infections should include not only treatment, but also prevention of new cases.
Purpose/Goal: To provide APRN with an overview of the five types of viral hepatitis.
Objectives:
1. Discuss the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and clinical course of the five types of viral hepatitis.
2. Describe the prevention and management of hepatitis.
