ANA's Mission for Continuing Nursing Education and Professional Development
ANA's mission: ANA and Nurses: A lifelong partnership for professional learning.
The planning, implementation, and evaluation of ANA's Continuing Nursing Education
activities are guided by the following:
- ANA's Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development
(2010)
- The American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation Manual
for Accreditation of Continuing Nursing Education 2009
- ANA's Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretative Statements (2008)
According to ANA's Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional
Development, "Nursing professional development is a life-long process of active
participation by nurses in learning activities that assist in developing and
maintaining their continuing competence, enhancing their professional practice,
and supporting achievement of their career goals."
Nursing professional development builds on the basic education and experience
of nurses throughout their professional careers for the ultimate goal of ensuring
the quality of health care to the public. Although professional nurses remain
ultimately responsible for their ongoing professional development, ANA, as the
professional association and a provider of continuing nursing education, shares
in this responsibility of providing continuing education activities that assist
professional nurses in accomplishing this task.
The American Nurses Association Center for Continuing Education and Professional
Development is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the
American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

ANA's Goals for the Independent Study Modules (ISM)
- To enable the participants to learn and retain knowledge by selecting this
method of participation through completion of the ISM at their own pace, within
their own time frame, and at the computer location of their own choice.
- To engage the participants more fully through:
- Self-testing and immediate correction of the test.
- Providing immediate feedback by explaining the rationale for the correct
response to each test question.
- Permitting re-reading of the article and re-taking the test as many times
as necessary until a pass grade of 75% or more is achieved.
- Requesting their evaluation of the ISM.
- To immediately provide the Continuing Nursing Education Certificate of Successful
Completion to participants who successfully complete the ISM so they can meet
their professional goals and the requirements of their employer, professional
association, and credentialing and licensing boards.
- To assure that the content of the ISM is current, relevant, and important
to nursing as a profession, individual nurses in different practice roles, specialties,
and settings, and to ANA.
